Position Description Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Performs lab work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the lab and in experiments

  • Collects data and maintains records related to corresponding laboratory

  • Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of lab and lab equipment, including ordering supplies, dishwashing, etc.

  • May coordinate care of rats, mice or other animals housed in the Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC), including maintenance of breeding colonies

  • Other duties as required to ensure the smooth operation of research lab and to facilitate the conduct of approved research study

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination (4 years) of job-related experience and college education

  • Experience may be substituted for college education on a year for year basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry

  • Biology lab experience is strongly preferred

Minimum Hire Rate 12.42
